Despite being more than five years old at this point, The Witcher 3 still has a dedicated community of players, in large part due to its excellent modding support. CD Projekt Red no doubt hopes to recreate that sort of long-term success with Cyberpunk 2077 as well, and the company just released the first set of official modding tools for the game today.

Though this first release of tools is rather slim, to begin with — no doubt a consequence of the game’s developers focusing on first fixing the bug-riddled game before adding any more features — it does clarify CDPR’s plans for the game’s future, with modding support being one of the big unknowns in the lead up to the game’s launch.

The tools that are currently available include:

  • Metadata: Per game release, required by some of the tools
  • ArhiveDump: A utility for listing contents of game data archives
  • TweakDump: A utility for listing contents of game Tweak DB (game settings) binaries
  • TweakDB IDs: A list of IDs of Tweak DB entries. Generated using TweakDump and tweakdb.str metadata

Enterprising PC gamers began spinning up Cyberpunk 2077 mods almost as soon as the game launched, but these new tools should hopefully make the whole process a little easier. And CD Projekt Red is also promising that the game’s modding tools “will be continuously updated alongside with game patches to ensure compatibility.”

Cyberpunk 2077’s launch has been a bumpy ride for CDPR, to say the least. The terrible state of the game on last-gen consoles has forced the company to begin issuing mass refunds to users, and the game was even pulled from the PlayStation Store. The game developer is also the subject of a lawsuit by its own investors and is currently under investigation by the Polish authorities over its behavior leading up to the game’s release.
